They’ll work hard to find you the best deal, and you can rest assured that you’ll get what you paid for. But here’s the catch: you have to book the trip well in advance, and you’ll still have to do the hard work.

7 tips to save money on your honeymoon
But let’s face it: Honeymoons are expensive. An average person like me spends $4,500 on a honeymoon, while a luxury honeymoon costs over $10,000. A honeymoon doesn’t come without a price. After all, travel costs money. But with the right planning, you can have a wonderful honeymoon that you’ll remember for decades to come, without racking up a huge bill. Here’s how I had a great honeymoon without going thousands of dollars into debt.
1. All inclusive option package
First, an all-inclusive honeymoon is easier to arrange. Your flight, hotel, transportation, meals and alcohol are all included in one package. If the thought of planning every detail is stressing you out, an all-inclusive honeymoon is a great option. Moreover, all-inclusive destinations are generally cheaper. We took a trip to Mexico before the pandemic that only cost $1200: The only other money we spent was on tips and mediocre sandwiches at the airport. I like to look for an all-inclusive holiday:
- Costco: It may sound strange, but most wholesale clubs offer a holiday planning service. I bought our Mexico vacation through Costco for only $1,200, and that even included a 24/7 vacation planning hotline.
- Groupon: That’s it! Groupon offers all-inclusive vacation packages. Just read the fine print carefully.
- Travel agencies: It’s a bit old-fashioned, but travel agents are excellent at finding all-inclusive deals. You have to pay a broker, but their insider discounts usually offset the extra cost.
- Cruises: I’m not a big fan of yachts, but my family loves to cruise! You pay just $300 per person for a few days at sea on an all-inclusive basis.
It’s important to do the math here: Make sure the all-inclusive option is cheaper. Calculate the cost of each element to make sure that an all-inclusive honeymoon is really the best option. For example, if you don’t drink alcohol, it may not make sense to pay for an all-inclusive package that includes alcohol.
2. Off-season travel
Weddings in the off-season are cheaper, so it stands to reason that traveling off-season will also save you money. If you absolutely must get married in June but don’t want to pay for a more expensive honeymoon in June, you can wait. Many of my friends put off their honeymoon for 3-6 months to save more money (or build up paid time off) before they leave.
3. Conducting travel arbitration
I love the romance of walking the streets of Paris with a croissant in hand. But let’s face it: Some honeymoon destinations are much more expensive than others. Take advantage of travel arbitrage: spend your honeymoon in states or countries where you make more money. This usually means traveling to areas where the cost of living is lower, such as Central America or the Caribbean. If you’re not sure if a place is a good deal, check the current exchange rate and the average cost of flights, hotels and entertainment in that place. You’ll quickly see where you can get the most benefit.
4. State that you are newly married
It may sound a little pretentious or slimy, but it works! As newlyweds, they want to help you. If it’s relevant to the conversation, casually mention that you and your loved one are on your honeymoon. Chances are you’ll get free champagne, a room upgrade or treats just for saying so. For example, we spent our honeymoon at Disneyland and wore Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Mouse ears. We had a special attitude at the hotel and in the parks, so it never hurts to let people know you’re in love! 
5. Eating like a local
If you’re vacationing at an all-inclusive resort, make sure you have your fill at the buffet. But unless you’re going on an all-inclusive vacation, you need to keep a close eye on your food spending. In hotels, resorts and tourist areas, prices are usually exorbitantly high. It is therefore advisable to eat in underground restaurants frequented by locals. We once paid $5 for a Mexican lunch on the beach that would have easily cost over $50 in the city. Some dishes you can also prepare yourself! We did this for our honeymoon to Disney. We called an Uber and bought groceries at Target for breakfast and lunch. We had breakfast in the room, ate sandwiches for lunch and spent money on dinner at a nice restaurant. Try to book a hotel that is close to a grocery store, or make sure you can use a carpool service to run errands.
6. Stop at a place off the beaten track
Hotels are great, but so are non-traditional accommodation options like train cars, yurts and tree houses! Depending on your destination, they may be cheaper than a hotel. If you do have to stay in a hotel, try to book one that is further away from the main attractions or tourist spots. These hotels usually have much lower prices. You have to walk to your destination, but I think it’s another opportunity for sightseeing!
7. Find free courses
If you absolutely must spend money on fun activities during your honeymoon, there are many free activities you can do together. A walk in your own hometown may not be as much fun, but a walk on an exotic beach is free, romantic and fun! Always look for free courses on your honeymoon. Parks, festivals, parades and old fashioned people watching are a great way to pass the time. 
How to finance a honeymoon
So you took my advice to save money for your honeymoon. But even the cheapest honeymoon takes a little effort. And how am I gonna pay for my honeymoon? First of all, you need to plan your honeymoon. Once you know how much it will cost, you can make a plan of action to pay the bill. Budget for the entire honeymoon, including expenses such as:
- Hotel
- Flight
- Power supply
- Entertainment
- Transport
The duration of your trip is also important. The further from home you are, the more money you spend on travel. A week is usually a good amount of time for a honeymoon, but even : Make sure you can afford a two-week tour of Japan. When you start calculating your honeymoon expenses, you may come to the conclusion that you need to cut back. We did that on our honeymoon! If so, please prioritize what is most important to you. This could mean that each of you could choose a course that costs, say, $100. 2. Cashback rewards
Do you want to increase your savings faster? My husband and I use cash back rewards to save a good amount of money for Christmas gifts each year. But you can apply this principle to any savings goal, including the honeymoon fund. If you have an airline mileage rewards card or a credit card with cashback rewards, use those. This may not be enough for the entire honeymoon, but an extra $200 to $500 for the honeymoon is already a great deal.

My husband and I used this option to pay for our honeymoon and it was a huge success! We were already living together before we got married, so we didn’t need any help decorating our house. Traditional wedding gifts, like china and pots, didn’t make sense to us, so we created the honey fund. Through honeymoon funds, your friends and family can contribute to the cost of your honeymoon instead of a wedding gift. Sure, it’s not traditional and some family members will scoff at the idea, but we really appreciated our family’s help! We actually spent very little of our own money on our Disney honeymoon, which was a huge blessing.
